Dataset overview

Shopify reports several million merchants globally, but most are dormant, zero-traffic, or password-protected storefronts. The addressable universe of stores doing real volume is much smaller. Adamir Scout indexes 16,438 verified ecommerce stores that meet a minimum traffic floor of 10,000 monthly visits. These are the stores an operator actually competes against.

Traffic and engagement statistics

The average store in the dataset receives 406,553 monthly visits with an average bounce rate of 0.5%. That bounce rate is lower than the 40-55% commonly cited because our floor filters out abandoned and very low-quality stores that inflate the global average.

Traffic by category

Categories vary enormously. Apparel & Accessories is the largest by store count, but not necessarily by average traffic per store.

For a deeper look at any category, we publish full store rankings and bounce rate breakdowns per vertical -- for example, top Apparel & Accessories stores, top Health & Beauty stores, or top Food & Drink stores. You can also explore by country, such as the top Shopify stores in the US or the top Shopify stores in the UK.

Where does the traffic come from?

Across the full dataset, organic search drives 0.5% of traffic on average, while paid channels account for 0.0%. But the mix varies sharply by category.

Categories with high organic search percentages tend to have lower bounce rates: the visitor already has intent when they arrive. Categories relying heavily on paid social see the opposite.

Page speed statistics

The average mobile PageSpeed Insights score across the dataset is 45 out of 100. Most stores fail Google's "good" threshold of 90+, and even 50+ is uncommon.

CrUX (Chrome User Experience Report) measures real users on real devices. PSI is a lab test on a simulated device. CrUX numbers are almost always worse because real visitors use slower phones and networks. Use CrUX for benchmarking, PSI for debugging.

Premium and luxury stores consistently show lower bounce rates and higher pages per visit. Higher-priced products create longer consideration journeys where visitors compare options, read reviews, and check return policies before purchasing.

Advertising statistics

62% of stores have at least one active ad surfaced in the Meta Ad Library or Google Ads Transparency Center. This is a floor: stores running ads exclusively on TikTok, Pinterest, or programmatic display are not counted.

The remaining 38% either rely entirely on organic channels or run ads on platforms our crawler doesn't yet cover. In the highest-traffic tiers, the ad adoption rate is significantly higher.

Why these numbers differ from public reports

Most "Shopify statistics" pages recycle the same secondary sources: Statista summaries, Shopify's own investor presentations, or survey data from 2020. Those sources measure different things:

  • Shopify's reported merchant count includes every account ever created, including dormant, password-protected, and development stores.
  • Statista's ecommerce benchmarks are typically survey-based with small sample sizes and no traffic verification.
  • Marketing blog statistics are often undated and cite each other in circles.

Every number on this page is a live aggregation across 16,438 stores, verified as active ecommerce sites with real traffic. If you want to verify any figure or filter it to your specific segment, you can explore the dataset directly.

Frequently asked questions

Shopify reports several million merchants worldwide. The population with meaningful traffic is much smaller: Adamir Scout tracks 16,438 verified ecommerce stores with at least 10,000 monthly visits, as of 2026-04-11.

0.5% across 16,438 verified stores. This is lower than the commonly cited 40-55% because our dataset filters out abandoned and very low-traffic stores.

62% have at least one active ad on Meta or Google as of 2026-04-11. This is a floor since ads on TikTok, Pinterest, and other channels are not yet tracked.

The average mobile PSI score is 45 out of 100. Most stores fall below Google's "good" threshold of 90+. Real-user LCP and INP data from CrUX shows even worse numbers since real devices are slower than lab simulations.

On average, 0.5% from organic search, 0.0% from paid channels. The mix varies sharply by category. See the traffic source breakdown table for per-category numbers.
